Mission: Shore Leave - Starbase 1
ON:
Poe wandered the ship again for what felt like the tenth time. he loved it here. This ship was everything he'd wanted. He wasn't sure why he was so drawn here but it was like something, or someone, was guiding him. He sighed. It had been quite an interesting posting so far and they hadn't even left the base. He was off to see the communications officer. As with every ship he had to check in and let her know about possible family etc... so that the coms could be run through. He hated this part but he'd do it anyway.
As he approached her office he straightened his shirt and plastered on the smile everyone expected of him. He rang the chime.
"Enter," Adrianna replied as she continued putting her personal affects into a box. She was happy to be leaving and she knew that she was leaving the place in respectable hands.
Poe entered smiling. "Hello Lieutenant Baciami, here to report to Communications for onboarding. I promise I wont' keep you long."
Adrianna nodded, "I'm actually just leaving, but I'll sort it anyway. Your new Comms person will be Elyse White. She'll be here tomorrow."
Relief coursed through him. He'd get this done with the Comms officer leaving and then didn't have to talk about it. "Oh.. well If it's okay I can get it sorted with you."
Adrianna put the lid on the box and sat down, gesturing to the seat opposite. "You're the new science officer, right? Poe?"
"Yes. I just arrived." He grinned and the light hit his eyes giving them the same lavender glow that Zai's had.
Adrianna saw his eyes and had to break her eyes away. Zai's death was a very fresh and raw wound. "Welcome to the Arcadia. It truly has been a fine ship to serve on. The woman coming to replace me was a year or two below me at the academy. She's... Much more approachable than me." Adrianna waved him to continue, "so, comms-wise. What can I do for you?"
"Well I'm pretty easy comms wise. Usually they ask us for Emergency contacts and priority messages. For me, none, and none. So I guess that about wraps up my report it."
Adrianna frowned and then raised a brow, "I'm sorry?"
He blinked. "Um...on every ship you have to report your emergency contacts and any regular messages you send ie: priority messages you may receive. I have neither of those things. I won't be sending messages off ship nor will I be getting any." He'd gone through this in his previous posting. They look at him as if he was from another time but he had nobody, just himself so...he was used to this. No doubt the women would make him state he had nobody a thousand times. Maybe he could head her questions off. "But maybe you can help me find someone on this ship. I had a Commander come to the door to personally deliver my orders a few days ago...I was trying to locate him to thank him. He said he serves on this ship."
Adrianna took a moment to process what had been said, "you know, cucciolo, if you should ever need to do this again, and you are in the same position, then I would advise that you just don't come to Comms, or you send them a message. We do not bite, we just... Question your sanity and wellbeing. But, your life is not of my concern-- each to their own." Adrianna nodded, making a quick note for Elyse. "Which commander are you looking for?" Adrianna looked up.
"I um...don't know his name but he had purple eyes like me and white hair. He was...really handsome."
Adrianna chuckled softly, but there was a glint of sadness in her eyes for just a moment. She cleared her throat. "I know who you speak of. Unfortunately, he is... Enjoying a paradise beyond our comprehension. His partner is still onboard though, should you wish to pass on your condolences. His name is Commander Walker."
Poe's eyes widened. "When did he ...how....I just saw him three days ago!"
Adrianna blinked for a moment and pulled up the screen, seat hung for Zai's file, "this man?" She pointed at the screen.
"That's him!" He smiled. "That's the man...but he was wearing a commander's uniform."
Adrianna let out a single laugh and sat back in her chair, cocking her jaw to the side, thinking. "Zai passed away weeks ago, Lieutenant," Adrianna said after a few moments, "that said, nothing seems to surprise me anymore. Look, he was a great man, quirky, but great. He will be dearly missed. He was taken far too soon and it doesn't surprise me that... There was a way he may have come back." Remembering the letter that Zai had sent to her, she added, "my advice is to talk to Commander Walker. He can tell you more about Zai. He was his husband. But... Tread cautiously."
Poe looked confused. "Um...okay that's ... a little creepy. That's the man I saw! He said I had to be here that it was my time to be on this ship and that it was my destiny...which I kind of new but .... how is he dead and alive!!!!"
Adrianna smiled, "you, cucciolo, are Starfleet. We do not question the impossible. We just accept it. Buckle up-- this ship has it's ghosts."
"Oh wonderful now I won't be able to sleep....I guess I can sage my quarters." He sighed. "WOW I just realized even the undead on this ship are hot."
"I thought my husband was dead for years until he showed up on a base last year. He's very much alive, but strange things happen and this ship seem to be a magnet for the weird." Ade replied.
Poe stared at her in silence for a moment. "Um...are you always this intense and scary?"
Adrianna snorted in amusement, "a question you may ask the engineering department and lower deckers. They are probably relieved I'm going-- I am ex undercover intel." She paused, "the woman taking my place, Elyse White-- I was her mentor. I can't see either department having much of a reprieve. She's good at what she does. Also ex intel."
"Spooky." He smiled. "But I think we're okay here. With your permission I'll leave you to it!"
Adrianna smiled, "welcome on board, lieutenant. The Arcadia is truly something."
He grinned. "I'll bet!" He stood and walked over. Before she could realize it he gave her a quick hug and then pulled back. "Nice to meet you!"
Adrianna froze and looked at him with somewhat of a glare, "oh, you're 'that guy'. Don't do that."
"What guy?"
"The guy that hugs strangers," she replied, "some may not be receptive. I usually am not, but you've caught me in an unusually good mood. I suggest if you haven't checked in with the CMO yet... Don't hug him."
He sighed "But he was so nice. He looks like a teddy bear you just want to hug."
"Merde," she shook her head, "I suggest Scots whisky."
"For what?"
Adrianna looked at Poe and bit her lips, "cucciolo, hugging fellow crew mates... It's not always welcomed. The CMO can be... I mean, I like him. We're very much on the same page. But should you ever upset him by doing something stupid or unprofessional-- an apology with something Scottish and alcoholic... You can't go wrong."
"Oh. Okay well I'll remember that." He smiled. "Thanks!" He gave a wave and headed out.
